  • Group – how you contribute to team activities and how to become the best team player that you can.
  • System – how your performance is boosted, or held back, by the system that you are in and how to work best within your environment.

Change

Change is all around us. With the advent of the internet they say that the pace of change is ever increasing. If we don’t keep up we are lost. Businesses will be wiped out in a flash by the new pretenders.

We believe that change has always been around us. Today’s change is more visible to us right now because it’s thisOne of the things that divides us is not the change itself, but our willingness to embrace it. change that we are living through. Sure, there are change plateaus and mountains to climb but the saying that the only constant in the world…is change… holds true.

At Emergent Solutions we have an approach that looks towards what we are trying to achieve in the face of change and how we can use the energy of change to sweep us along rather than engulf us in a destructive tidal wave.

Teams

They say that a team is more than the sum of the individuals. While this is true for great teams, it’s also true for poorly performing teams. The performance of a poor team can be way below the level of any of the team members.

It’s hard to go very far in today’s world without being in some kind of team, from the officially sanctioned group to the loose collective. Teams are often created from a mix of other teams, groups and individuals that are already available, or those brought in to fill a gap.

As the team forms, a group personality emerges that is independent of the individuals and needs managing separately.

So, what specifically can we do to help bring out the best team persona from the team members?

Individuals

We are in the midst of a working revolution, driven by adding shareholder value and measuring everything against the bottom line. Companies have moved on from the hierarchy of bosses, managers, and workers. Middle management layers have been stripped out and meaner companies fight to be leaner.

We live in companies where the individual is more personally responsible for their own actions and performance than ever before. What has replaced the hierarchy? Flat structures? Matrix management? Multiple reporting lines?

We haven’t yet arrived at our final destination. It will be interesting to see how the changing role of back room support and increasing focus on internal and external customers plays out.

Consulting

Business at internet speed, this is the new economy where companies are born, live and die in a fraction of the company lifespan of fifty, twenty or even ten years ago.

Many companies bring in consultants to fill a variety of needs; an extra pair of hands, a skill unavailable internally, best practice, benchmarking, strategy. It’s all out there, from A to Z.

Our approach is to design our engagements in a more encompassing way, often re-applying techniques that have proven successful other fields.

Fatal Flaws;

  • ‘Fix’ problem people. They aren’t broken.
  • Get the new broom and start sweeping.
  • Decide who you should sack.
  • Figure out how you can get rid of that difficult somebody.
  • Forming, storming, norming and performing.
  • Manage the team or take on responsibility for their output. They keep that.
  • Send the team out to go paint balling or build a shelter from a plastic sheet and a ball of string.
  • Send out for psychometrics.

Making it Work;

  • Explore the visible and hidden dynamics of the team and work with you to reshape it.
  • For whatever reason, you are where you are. That is where you have to start. We make small changes, see what works and do more of that.
  • Acknowledge that there is no right answer, no magic bullet. Steady incremental change is our route.
  • If the team is formed, we look at the individuals, the interpersonal, and group dynamics.
  • Recommend specific behaviours that help individuals to manage the way that they are perceived inside (and outside) the team.
  • Help individuals to resolve internal conflicts that they bring to the team game.
  • Work with you to examine the system drivers that might be shaping the team’s behaviour.

It’s a fact that the world isn’t full of world class teams. Or even exceptional teams. It may be that all the resources seem to be in place and yet the team still isn’t firing on all cylinders. An interesting question is what other factors could be operating in the background, in fact on many levels, to undermine what could be outstanding performance?

One answer is the team members themselves; as leaders, as individuals and as observers in team interplay. Interpersonal effects and influences are often ignored and certainly underestimated.

So, if you have your structural plan in place, you now have to ask yourself "Are the people issues covered?"  We can work with individuals, loosely connected groups or formed teams to help bring out their full potential.

They say that a team is more than the sum of the individuals. If you want to explore working with the team personality to help bring out those intangible qualities that underpin exceptional team performance, contact us.
